Verbier is a picturesque village in southwestern Switzerland. It is one of the country’s top ski resorts and has some of the best off piste skiing in the world. In the summer, there are 400km of hiking trails to enjoy plus climbing, paragliding and an annual music festival.
Verbier can be accessed by road (160 kms; approx. 1 hour 45 minutes) or by train from Geneva international airport. Alternatively, Sion airport is around 50 minutes’ drive. The airport is ideal for those with private jets but now also receives flights from London City airport.

The beautiful mountain resort of Verbier in the Four Valleys is the in-place for homeowners who want to ski hard and party harder. Verbier mixes up picture-pretty wooden chalets and contemporary penthouses, refined clubs and joyfully edgy new hotels: check out how magnificently The W Hotel has transformed the Medran lift station. Verbier is a true year-round resort with hiking trails, mountain bike paths and a packed sporting and cultural calendar for the summer.
In winter however it is above the village on Verbier’s highly prized steep slopes that the real daytime action happens. This is Switzerland’s largest ski area, a proper, hard-wired Alpine resort where a south-facing bowl provides a satisfying tangle of blue and red pistes, several infamous black runs and unforgettable off-piste skiing. Descend the legendary Bec des Rosses, free ride through the Vallon d’Arby or ski as a family on the forgiving slopes through the trees to La Tzoumaz.Â
As night falls the focus moves into the village centre. Après-ski evenings often start at Hotel Farinet, Mont Fort Pub or Le Rouge and end at the Casbah or legendary Farm Club where royalty and celebrities party with seasonaires. Les Esserts. Exclusive Les Esserts offers mostly chalets with a limited number of apartments. Its position directly in the middle of the Verbier bowl ensures great views and good sunshine with the east side of the area a particular hit with buyers who want to easy access to Le Rouge piste.
How To Buy in Switzerland:Â
The purchase process in Switzerland is straightforward and well structured. However Switzerland imposes restrictions on who can purchase property with the precise rules differing between regions and sometimes between neighbouring resorts. In general non-Swiss nationals who want to buy property in Switzerland must obtain a permit prior to any purchase. The two laws that concern the purchase of second homes are the Lex Koller, introduced in the 1980s as a way of limiting the number of second-homes allowed to be purchased by non-residents and the Lex Weber, introduced in 2012, limiting the supply of new second homes. Under the Lex Koller foreign buyers are only permitted to own one property in Switzerland and they cannot resell their home within five years of purchase.
There are some of Switzerland’s 26 cantons (administrative areas) where only Swiss nationals or people holding a Permit B (long-term work permit) or a Permit C (a permanent residence permit) can buy. Many of the elite ski resorts and also the cities of Geneva and Zurich have severe restrictions. However special government legislation means that all new-build homes in Andermatt, most unusually, are free of any restrictions on non-Swiss owners. To fully discuss purchasing options it is essential to consult a specialist.
