A rare opportunity to acquire a high-altitude restaurant (this property has only had three owners in its 70-year history) with the option to remodel and extend into a modern and outstanding property with residential use on the upper floors.
La Grande Ourse located one mile high, idyllically situated on the incredible Mont Chery Mountain, Les Gets. The panoramic views breathtakingly sweep all around with Mt. Blanc majestically jewelling this unique crown. Historically it is acclaimed as one of the first high altitude restaurants, built in 1938, in the Haute Savoie Alps. It is this unique view of Mont Blanc, regarded as the best in the Alps, that gives an investment opportunity to purchase a real ‘one off’ unique location.
Empty for 15 years and taking some four years to renovate, the three storied La Grande Ourse affords a unique opportunity to live a completely different lifestyle. There are only four permissions granted for vehicle access to this conservation area, the restaurant being one of those privileged few. Included with this purchase are the ‘tools’ required to maximize this dream location: two ski-doos, a modern piste bully with 20-seater cabin and an all-terrain four by four.
The present owners enjoy a privileged lifestyle that includes skiing, snowboarding, parascending, mountain biking, motor biking, white water rafting and simple mountain walks and picnics. Without doubt its position alone on the mountain has generally been acclaimed as one of the most exceptional in the World.
The property also has stunning ‘owners’ accommodation on the top floor that could potentially be extended down to the second floor turning it into a unique home not to be repeated in the French Alps.
Renovation of the property ranges from the stone cladding of the lower exterior walls with Italian granite, using local artisans, to the warmly beautiful Austrian pine wood clad interior. This has been an incredibly complex process with extensive use made of the local helicopter service to bring materials to the site.
The current layout offers the top Penthouse two-bedroomed apartment for the private use of the owners. With a designer stone wood burner and modern contrasting kitchen.
On the first floor is a Restaurant Gastronomic with its incredible views, there is a large rustic open wood burning fire, seating for ninety covers inside and an additional 100 covers on the outside terrace. Complete catering kitchen and wash area.
The ground floor comprises of a charming bistro, again with small wood burning fire, a second complete commercial kitchen, and all ancillary units such as walk-in fridge and freezer. There is also an Apartment and adjoining storage area/garage.

Portes du Soleil
This ski area’s 580km of terrain covers 14 resorts across the Franco-Swiss border. The main ones in France are Avoriaz (a purpose-built resort with a quirky charm) and Morzine (a proper little Alpine town). In Switzerland, Champéry village is friendly, relaxed and charming. The jagged ridge of the Dents du Midi towers over the village, where traditional buildings line the main street.
Overall, the variety of slopes suits everyone, from beginners to veteran powder-hounds, and Avoriaz also has a broad array of terrain parks.
This superb ski area goes straight to the top of the class and investment in state-of-the-art snowmaking helps on the lower slopes.
Les Gets is an attractive, small, family-friendly resort with a very French feel to it, partly because of appetising food and wine shops lining the main street. The area of slopes it shares with Morzine is the most extensive local network in the region, and in some respects Les Gets is the better base for that shared area.
Les Gets is one of the 12 resorts that make up the Portes du Soleil ski area on the Swiss-French border. The great thing about this area is that it offers one of the shortest transfers from Geneva at around an hour so you can catch a morning flight from the UK and be on the slopes by lunchtime.
The main local slopes – accessed by a gondola and a fast chairlift – are shared with Morzine. From Les Gets it takes about 50 minutes to ski to the French purpose-built resort of Avoriaz then it’s a short distance to the Swiss border. It’s possible to ski the extensive circular tour, which you can do in either direction, travelling through both French and Swiss resorts.
On the opposite side of Les Gets is Mont Chéry, accessed by a gondola followed by a chair or drag. The slopes here include some of the most challenging in the area and are usually very quiet. Both sectors offer wooded and open slopes. This ski area has a variety of skiing, and spectacular views.
At top is the La Grand Ourse, a highly rated restaurant run by an English family with 180-degree views of the Mont Blanc Massif.
